Your First Massage Appointment: What to Expect at Lavender Holistic Therapy
If you’ve never booked a massage before, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what to expect.
Many first-time clients worry about awkwardness, what to wear, what happens when they arrive, or whether they need to know anything in advance.
The truth is, the process is simple and designed to help you feel comfortable from the moment you book. I’ll happily guide you if needed, but all decisions belong to you.
Before You Arrive
Once we’ve discussed the type of treatment you’d like and how long you’d like to book for, and the booking is completed, I’ll send you a short online medical form to complete before your appointment.
This allows me to review any health conditions, injuries, medications, or anything else important ahead of time, so we can use your appointment time properly and tailor the treatment to you.
This helps us make the most of your appointment time and avoid using treatment time on paperwork. It also allows us to identify any medical conditions or contraindications in advance, so if a treatment isn’t suitable, we can let you know beforehand and avoid you making an unnecessary journey.
On Arrival
When you arrive, I’ll guide you up the stairs to the treatment room and show you where everything is.
There’s a hook on the door for coats and a storage box for your belongings, which can be placed safely under the treatment bed away from oils or products.
Then we’ll have a quick chat about anything I need to follow up from your form, any areas of tension you’d like me to focus on, and how you’re feeling that day.
Getting Ready
Once everything is covered, I’ll leave the room so you can get settled in privacy.
The room will already be prepared with soft ambient lighting and a warm, comfortable treatment space.
I’ll ask you to get onto the couch and under the blanket, then I’ll return once you’re ready.
During the Treatment
Once you’re comfortable and settled, the treatment begins.
I usually start more gently and gradually build pressure as the body warms up and relaxes. This allows the muscles to respond properly rather than forcing straight into deeper work too quickly.
I’ll check in with you during the treatment, especially if we’re working on tighter areas, and you’re always welcome to let me know if you’d like any adjustments.
Your comfort matters. That includes pressure, temperature, positioning, and anything else that helps you relax. Private areas remain covered at all times. I’ll only uncover the area of the body that I’m working on, so no need to worry.
To help support the body, I also use bolsters where needed, such as under the ankles when lying face down, which many clients find much more comfortable for the lower back and legs.
Also, I don’t tend to talk much during treatment. That said, don’t be shy. If you’d like to chat, I’m happy to. I usually try not to start a conversation myself though, unless I have something treatment-related to ask. I simply want you to be able to enjoy your treatment and not feel obliged to talk to me.
You don’t have to worry about, how your body looks either. I don’t judge if you shaved your legs, wether you have skin tags or come celulite. Those are not at all on my mind and usually nothing I haven’t seen 🙂 As long as basic hygine is part of your routine, I don’t even expect you to come to me straight out of the shower.
Does Massage Hurt?
Massage should not feel like something you need to “survive.”
If an area is especially tight or tense, there can sometimes be discomfort while it’s being worked on. This is normal, but it should feel manageable and purposeful, not like punishment.
There is never any need to suffer through it in silence. If the pressure feels too much, just say so. I’m always happy to adjust it. Good massage is about working with your body, not fighting it. But I’m not a mind reader.
While I ask, and watch for your body’s reactions, like tensing up, I can’t always know, unless I’m told. It’s not rude or bothersome to me if you ask to be warmer, colder or for lighter pressure. I’d much rather you walk out of my treatment room happy and feeling better.
At the End of Your Treatment
When the treatment comes to an end, I like to finish gently rather than abruptly.
I ring a small bell with a soft, calming sound to signal that your session is complete. It’s a simple touch, but many clients find it peaceful, and personally I think it creates a lovely gentle way to wake up.
If you’ve had an eye pillow or towel over the eyes, I’ll remove it carefully, then check in and ask how you’re feeling. After that, I’ll leave the room so you can take your time getting dressed in privacy.
There’s no rush to jump straight back into the world. I’d always recommend taking a moment, moving slowly, and enjoying that post-massage float while it lasts.
If you’ve been thinking about trying massage but felt unsure, hopefully this has made it feel a little easier. You’re always welcome to get in touch with any questions before booking.
